These sealants help protect the area from acids and bacteria which contribute to rapid tooth decay.

Dental Sealant Expectations

Dental sealants can usually be taken care of in just one visit. To start, your dentist or hygienist will clean the tooth with either a paste or a rotating brush. Next, the cleaned tooth will be rinsed off and dried. Following this, an acid solution, which will create a rough surface to form, thereby enabling the sealant to adhere, will be used. Once the tooth is again dried, a liquid sealant will be spread on your tooth and will then be hardened, either by a two-component sealant or by a light. As soon as it is done hardening, the sealant will become a hard coating and you will once again be able to chew naturally and without pain.

Sealant Aftercare

While you will not have to restrict your diet or eating habits to maintain the dental sealants, it is a good idea to refrain from chewing on hard substances immediately after the procedure. While there are no restrictions in terms of your dental sealants, it is important to treat them as you would your natural teeth. Continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily and continue scheduling dentist appointments every six months.

Pros & Cons of Sealants

The benefits of having dental sealants far outweigh any associated risks; however, there are several important things to keep in mind when considering a dental sealant procedure. The first thing to remember is that these dental sealants are not a solution to preexisting cavities. Dental sealants are preventative and can reduce the possibility of developing cavities, but they will not fix an existing issue. It is also important to know that, though unlikely, it is possible that a cavity could be covered under the dental sealant. Fortunately, the sealant would prevent the cavity from growing any further. Finally, remember that dental sealants are not a permanent fix and will need to be touched up or replaced every three years.

The benefits of having dental sealants, on the other hand, are quite substantial. For starters, the sealant does an excellent job of reducing the likelihood of cavities forming. Sealants are specially designed to prevent bacteria and plaque from forming in the fissures and grooves of your back teeth. As an added bonus, sealants are much cheaper to apply when compared to filling a cavity, which can cost up to four times as much. Finally, the procedure for having a dental sealant placed is not only quick, it is also painless. The dentist will simply clean your tooth and then apply the coating and wait for it to harden.

Are Sealants Necessary?

Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket.
