Dental Implants

Dental implants (or “False Teeth” as they are historically known) are a surgically positioned titanium post that is placed beneath the gum line that allows your dentist to set replacement teeth or a bridge. Dental implants are made from titanium, which is the only metal capable of grafting with human bone.

Although dental implants have made tremendous strides over the past few decades, not all patients suffering from missing teeth will need to pursue this option. Some forms of damaged teeth, such as smalls cracks or even severe decay, might be better addressed with dental bonding or the removal of a tooth.

At Cherrywood Dental Care, there is nothing we love more than watching our patients discover a brilliant new smile. If you think that dental implants may be the right option for you, please contact our staff. We are proud to provide the comprehensive care you need to improve your dental health and are committed to returning even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Expectations

Dental implants usually take several visits and potentially a few months to address.

Following your initial consultation with your dentist, and after determining that dental implants are right for you, your dentist will schedule a follow up appointment. During this visit, your tooth or teeth that is suffering from decay or damage will be pulled. Once this is done, your dentist will examine your jawbone to ensure that a tooth implant is a viable option. This step in the process will generally require X-Rays or some form of imaging.

After determining you are a good fit for this procedure, your dentist will install a titanium post into your jawbone. Following this part of the procedure, your bone will be given time (potentially a few months) to heal and ultimately graft to the titanium post.

Once the post has healed and grafting has occurred, an abutment will be placed. This abutment is designed to hold the crown, which will be adhered using either dental cement or a specialty screw. Following this, your new tooth or teeth will be in place and the procedure will finally be complete!

Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits of getting dental implants are substantial. One of the most significant benefits is that the implants will preserve the integrity of the bone. Also, filling any gaps will prevent other significant issues from developing in the future. Neglecting to have a dental implant placed can result in other teeth suffering from infection and decay, which, if left untreated, can result in more teeth needing to be pulled out.
Another benefit is that dental implants can allow you to upgrade your dentures. If you currently have removable dentures, a dental implant can allow you to secure these dentures to your gums.

Dental implants also improve your appearance and restore self-confidence. In addition to getting you back to a full smile, neglecting to replace missing teeth can, over time, cause the shape of your face and jaw to change. Replacing even one tooth can have a substantial positive impact on your quality of life and sense of self-confidence.

Dental implants also make practicing good oral self-care easier, because they allow patients to better brush and floss. Dental implants allow patients to complete their smile with an appliance that allows them to chew and bite much like they used to. Dental implants help to maintain the integrity of the jawbone, and save the jaw from bone loss.

Caring for your Dental Implants

If properly cared for, dental implants can last for decades. It is also important to be aware that the healing process following this procedure can take a few weeks. As such, we recommend sticking to a diet of softer foods and slowly introducing harder, more abrasive foods as your discomfort and sensitivity subside.

After this period of time, you will not have to restrict your diet or eating habits to maintain the dental implants; however, it is important to continue treating them as you would your natural teeth. Continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily and continue scheduling dentist appointments every six months. If you continue to take good care of your teeth, your teeth will continue to take good care of you.

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, most insurance plans cover dental implants procedures. Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what opportunities may be available.
