Bone Grafting

A dental bone graft is a procedure that occurs when a tooth or teeth have been missing for an extended period of time. When this occurs, there is a greater risk for the jawbone to experience deterioration. If this area is left untreated for too long, bone loss occurs. Depending upon when intervention happens, it might be possible to replace the bone tissue that has been lost with a dental bone graft. Grafting can also be performed at time of extraction.

If you decide to pursue this form of treatment, bone or synthetic material will be placed to encourage growth of bone tissue in the area where loss has occurred. It is possible that synthetic material is the correct option for you, but there is also the option of using the bone of a donor, either human or animal. When taking this route, the donated bone goes through a process to make it suitable for safe placement.

At Cherrywood Dental Care, there is nothing we love more than watching our patients discover a brilliant new smile. If you have been experiencing any of the issues stated above, please contact our staff to see if a dental bone graft is right for you. Our clinic is proud to provide the comprehensive care you need to improve your dental health, and is committed to returning even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Procedure Expectations

A bone grafting procedure involves taking a section of bone from another area of your body (or from an animal or donor) and then using a special grafting material that is placed on your jawbone.

Once the bone graft is complete, it will take some time for the area to properly heal. Generally, patients will wait several months for the grafted area to create strong new bone, which is then tested to ensure that your dental implant will be secure and stable. If the graft is minor, dental implants can be performed at the same time, but this is a case by case basis.

Once your dentist has inspected and is convinced that the bone is strong and stable enough, they will move ahead with the dental implant. While bone grafting has become increasingly common, it is important to understand that this is major surgery and it is a good idea to discuss any questions or concerns you may have with your dentist.

Success Rates

While many patients experience success with dental bone grafts, it is important to note that success of the dental bone grafts is not a guarantee. Common causes of issue include infection, which will cause the graft to become painful, and in some case, to fail. While our staff will do everything it can to ensure the success of your graft, there will be cases where this approach will simply not work. Should this occur, your doctor will discuss alternative options.

Benefits of Dental Bone Grafting

The benefits of having a dental bone graft are substantial, and include the following:

  • Dental procedures are more effective when the jawbone is as close to its original size and position
  • Proper restoration of structure and bone mass helps prevent additional issues
  • Improved functionality
  • Improved aesthetics

Aftercare

Post-operative care is incredibly important following your bone graft. Taking the necessary precautions and maintenance will go a long way in minimizing swelling, avoiding unnecessary pain, and staving off infections.

In general, it is a good idea to avoid vigorous mouth rinsing or touching the wound following your surgery, as doing so may cause bleeding to occur. To help alleviate any lasting pain, be sure to continue taking your prescribed medication at the recommended doses. Ice packs can also be used to help reduce the swelling. It is also a good idea to generally restrict your activities following surgery until you begin to feel back to normal, which generally takes around 7-10 days.

Once you have recovered from the general surgery, it is important to continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily and continue scheduling dentist appointments every six months. If you continue to take good care of your teeth, your teeth will continue to take good care of you.

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, most insurance plans cover a dental bone graft procedure. Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what
opportunities may be available.
