What Dental Crowns Are

Dental Crowns are a method of filling gaps with a tooth-shaped cap that is placed on top of a tooth or teeth when this area becomes damaged. The crown protects the tooth structure that is still remaining, improves oral hygiene, and helps you chew and bite better, which in turn improves other systems in the body, such as your digestive system.

There are several circumstances where a dental crown is suggested, but generally these fall into one of two categories: aesthetics or functionality. Aesthetically, dental crowns can cover stained teeth and straighten out crooked teeth. With regards to functionality, crowns can improve weakened teeth, teeth that are heavy filled, replace individual teeth, and/or be used following a root canal.

Types of Crowns

Crowns are typically shaded to match the current color of your surrounding teeth, and can be constructed using a wide variety of materials, including resin, metal, ceramic, or porcelain. Because of their functionality as well as similar appearance to natural teeth, most patients decide to have porcelain dental crowns put in place. These crowns cover the entire tooth and can act as a seal following a root canal. Once the porcelain is glazed, it will not only look natural, it will also feel natural. As an added bonus, it takes much longer for these crowns to stain as compared to your natural teeth.

Procedure Expectations

Before placing a crown, our staff will take X-rays of areas that are in question to determine the extent of the damage. If it is determined that the gums and roots are in stable condition, the dentist will begin removing the areas of decay. Following this, the dentist will begin reshaping the area in preparation of fitting the crown. Once this is complete, an impression of the tooth or teeth is made. During this time, a temporary crown may be placed to protect this area from damage. Once your crown has been completed, you can schedule a follow up appointment to remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one. As soon as the shape and color of the crown are to your liking, your dentist or hygienist will cement the crown into place, and then you will be free to be on your way!

Crown Aftercare

While you will not have to change your diet or alter any of your eating habits to maintain the beauty of your new dental crowns, it is a good idea to avoid chewing on hard substances immediately following the procedure. Although there are no specific restrictions on your dental crowns, it is a good idea to continue practicing good dental hygiene. Brush and floss twice daily to keep them in impeccable shape and get them to last many years.

Crowns versus Veneers

When deciding between a dental crown or veneers, it is important to understand the differences between these approaches and what the benefits are to each. Veneers are mostly used for cosmetic purposes, whereas dental crowns are primarily for patients who want to restore not only appearance, but also functionality. Unlike veneers, crowns will cover the surfaces of the tooth, which will improve the effectiveness
of biting and chewing when you are eating.

Site Effects & Risks

Following the placement of your crown, your teeth or gums may be extra sensitive. This is a common response and can be easily managed with over-the counter pain relievers. We can also provide you with specially formulated rinses and pastes that will work to ease your discomfort.

Following a dental crown procedure, it is important to continue practicing good daily oral hygiene to prevent bacterial infections and decay. Just like the natural tooth it is replicating, the crown is also at risk of fracturing, chipping, or cracking when eating or chewing on hard foods.

Crown Durability

Generally, crowns will last patients anywhere between 5-15 years, but provided you continue taking good care of your teeth and avoid foods that are likely to cause cracks or fissures, your crowns may last for decades.

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, most insurance plans cover dental crown procedures. Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket.
