Composite Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a popular treatment for patients who are experiencing cracked or chipped teeth, mild to significant gaps between their teeth, exposed roots, or general decay. The bonding is molded from a material that is both strong and designed to feel and look like your real teeth. Common reasons for patients to have a dental bonding procedure include:

  • Covering up discoloration
  • Filling a small gap between teeth
  • Changing the shape of a tooth
  • Repairing decayed teeth
  • Repairing cracks or chips in teeth
  • Protecting the root of a tooth
  • Making the tooth look larger to match other teeth

If you are experiencing any of the issues stated above, consider setting up an appointment for dental bonding today, especially if you are experiencing chips or cracks. The longer these remain untreated, the greater the chance there is of decay and additional damage occurring. When added decay and damage occurs, invasive procedures often become necessary.

Nearly all patients are candidates for dental bonding. At Cherrywood Dental Care, there is nothing we love more than watching our patients discover a brilliant new smile. If you have been experiencing any of these issues, please contact our staff to see if dental bonding is right for you. Our clinic is proud to provide the comprehensive care you need to improve your dental health and is committed to returning even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Procedure Expectations

The first step of dental bonding involves cleaning and drying the tooth that needs to be repaired. Once our dentists have applied the appropriate cleansers, the tooth will be ready for bonding, which will attach the tooth to the existing surface. This resin is comprised of several different adhesives and other components, which is applied until the desired thickness is reached.

It is important to note that this compound can easily be colored to match the surrounding teeth. Once the resin is set, the new tooth is cleaned, polished, and then adjusted to fit your bite and smile. This process normally only takes an hour or two, however the process can take longer depending upon the severity of damage and the number of teeth that are being repaired.

Bonding Vs Veneers

Dental bonding and veneers are two different approaches that have somewhat similar results. Put simply, dental bonding is a simplified version of veneers. It is simpler, quicker, and cheaper than veneers, and also far less invasive. The primary drawback to bonding as opposed to veneers is that your bonds will have to be touched up with more frequency.

Veneers are often referred to as “Instant Orthodontics” because they have such a dramatic and immediate effect on improving your smile, as they will work to correct discolored teeth, stains, and chips, as well as address any teeth that are crooked or an unwanted length or size. The veneers are very thin, custom made shells that are designed to match the color of your teeth and cover the front surface of the selected tooth or teeth, thereby improving their general appearance.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

One of the clearest benefits to having bonding applied is the instant improvement to your smile. Many patients feel self-conscious about their chipped or cracked teeth, and having this issue resolved often results in increased confidence and improved feelings of positive self-worth. Also, the procedure can usually be taken care of in just one visit to the dentist. Additionally, dental bonding does not require any removal of tooth enamel, and anesthesia is generally not necessary. Finally, bonding helps strengthen the tooth, which in turns helps prevent infection, bacteria, and further damage.

Aftercare

While you will not have to restrict your diet or eating habits to maintain the dental bonding, it is a good idea to refrain from chewing on hard substances immediately after the procedure. While there are no restrictions in terms of your dental bonding, it is important to continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily and continue scheduling dentist appointments every six months. If you continue to take good care of your teeth, your teeth will continue to take good care of you.

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what opportunities may be available.
