Night Guards for TMJ/TMD & Bruxism

Night guards are a dental appliance or mouth guard that is specially designed to help patients stop damaging their teeth due to clenching or grinding of their teeth while they sleep.

Common signs that this may be occurring is waking up with jaw pain, headaches, or other pain that cannot be traced to anything specific. Beyond being a source of daily aggravation and discomfort, this can also lead to serious damage and deterioration to your jawbone, and also negatively affect other teeth and even your hearing.

While night guards can do a great deal to address this issue, it is also important to understand what is causing it to occur. The most common causes of jaw pain and early morning headaches are TMJ/TMD or bruxism.

At Cherrywood Dental Care, there is nothing we love more than watching our patients discover a brilliant new smile. If you have been experiencing the issues stated above, please contact our staff to see if night guards are right for you. Our clinic is proud to provide the comprehensive care you need to improve your dental health and is committed to returning even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Caring for Your Night Guard

There are several best practices when it comes to things you should do and things you should not do to take care of your night guards.

Be sure that you DO the following to take care of your night guard:

  • Clean your hands before touching your night guard
  • Clean your night guard with toothpaste and rinse it with water every night
  • Allow time for the guard to dry before storing it
  • Use anti-bacterial solution for quick rinses

Be sure that you DO NOT do the following:

  • Drink any beverages other than water at night
  • Smoke
  • Soak your guard in rubbing alcohol
  • Leave the night guard in past sleeping hours

In addition to proper maintenance of your night guards, be sure to continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily and continue scheduling dentist appointments every six months.

If you continue to take good care of your teeth, your teeth will continue to take good care of you!

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, many insurance plans will cover the cost of night guards. Keep in mind, however, that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what opportunities may be available.
