Extract Problem, Diseased, or Decayed Teeth

A tooth extraction occurs when your dentist has determined that the best option for preventing further damage to your oral health is to remove a tooth or teeth. The procedure for tooth removal is often a relatively simple process, however it is not uncommon for patients to feel insecure or nervous about taking this step.

Please note: if your teeth have recently been damaged or knocked loose, contact your dentist as quickly as possible. Having an emergency procedure can sometimes mean the difference between saving your tooth and having to have it extracted.

If you have a loose or damaged tooth or teeth and are wondering if a tooth extraction might be right for you, please contact our staff. At Cherrywood Clinic, we are proud to provide the comprehensive care you need to improve your dental health and are committed to returning even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Expectations

Tooth extraction can usually be taken care of with just a few dental appointments. During your first consultation, your dentist will determine if tooth extraction is necessary. If your dentist determines that saving your damaged tooth or teeth is not a viable option, they will begin the procedure to extract your tooth.

For a simple tooth extraction, the dentist will numb the jaw, tissues and nerves and use a simple tool to pull the tooth. Depending upon the severity of your case, there are two general types of extractions that can be performed.

Simple extractions can be completed by numbing the nerves, jaw, and surrounding tissue of the tooth or teeth that are going to be removed. Once properly numbed, your dentist will use a special tool that will remove the affected tooth within minutes.

For complex tooth extractions, such as molar or wisdom teeth, you will often be given a general anesthesia designed to your comfort level. Once the anesthesia has begun to work, your dentist will surgically remove the tooth or teeth and suture any areas where gaps remain to control the bleeding and facilitate the healing process.

Patients who undergo tooth extraction procedures often feel a sense of pressure when the tooth is extracted, however, there is little to no pain attributed to the procedure. Following your extraction, your dentist will suggest over-the-counter pain relievers to be used as needed to manage any pain or swelling following the procedure.

Tooth Replacement Options

With the exception of wisdom teeth, any tooth or teeth that have been extracted will need to be replaced following this procedure. Failure to add a replacement can cause oral issues such as:

  • Gum Disease
  • Jaw Bone Loss
  • Teeth Migration
  • Decay of Surrounding Teeth

Your dentist will provide you with a variety of replacement options following your extraction. The two most popular options are dental implants and dental bridges.

Dental implants (or “False Teeth”) are a surgically positioned titanium post that is placed beneath the gum line that allows your dentist to set replacement teeth or a bridge. Dental implants are made from titanium, which is the only metal capable of grafting with human bone.

A dental bridge is a replacement tooth or teeth that fills the space (or “bridges the gap”) where a tooth or teeth are missing. The dental bridge will not only improve the aesthetics of your smile, but will also actively hold surrounding teeth in place, which in turn will make daily tasks such as talking or eating much easier to manage. Additionally, the dental bridge can help prevent remaining teeth from becoming loose and eventually falling out.

Aftercare

Although tooth extractions are often simple and safe procedures, there are risks involved following the procedure that are important to be aware of. In particular, a dry socket can occasionally develop when the space where the extraction occurred does not heal properly. If you have sustained discomfort following your procedure, please contact your dentist.

It is also important to be aware that bleeding following a tooth extraction is very common. Gauze is the most common treatment to help stop the bleeding.

In caring for your tooth extraction, be sure to only have liquids for the first 24 hours after the procedure. You should also avoid using straws and/or smoking for at least 48-72 hours after the procedure. You will also want to avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours.

Within one or two weeks, you should be able to return to your regular oral care routine. Be sure to continue practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily and continue scheduling dentist appointments every six months. If you continue to take good care of your teeth, your teeth will continue to take good care of you.

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, most insurance plans cover tooth extraction procedures. Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what opportunities may be available.
