Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. How does the Bioclear® procedure work?

Any biofilm that is present must first be removed from the teeth. Biofilm is removed by gently scouring it away with a small instrument and cleaning powder. This removes the microscopic sticky layer that is found on the surface of the teeth without causing any damage to the tooth’s surface.

Once the tooth is prepared, a thin Mylar form is placed on the tooth. The form acts as a mold for a new tooth surface. Liquid composite is then injected into the forms. Lastly, the resin is hardened by a special ultraviolet light. The tooth is shaped and polished to desired shape and appearance.

  1. Why is Bioclear® used instead of a crown?

The main reason patients elect to use Bioclear® is because it is far more conservative than a crown. This helps to preserve the tooth’s natural structure.

In addition, crowns are at a higher risk for decay. Decay begins at the edge of the crown and can progress into the rest of the tooth if it is not immediately addressed. Most crowns prevent x-rays from allowing visibility into the tooth, however Bioclear® does not prevent access to the tooth.

  1. Does insurance cover the Bioclear® treatment?

Bioclear® is a modern and effective alternative to traditional restorative dentistry methods. Unfortunately, it is not currently covered by insurance.

  1. How is Bioclear® different from traditional bonding?

Traditional composite resin bonding uses old dental techniques. While it can be successfully used in some cases, there are some challenges. Traditional bonding can expose ledges and gaps where bacteria can easily accumulate. This can result in staining, chipping, cavities and gum issues. Bioclear® works by eliminating these ledges and gaps which leaves the teeth fuller, stronger and more attractive. Bioclear® also ensures there is minimal damage to the tooth.

  1. How is Bioclear® different from Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain Veneers are a common method used to cosmetically change the front teeth to obtain a more beautiful smile. Porcelain Veneers can help patients achieve beautiful results, especially when the teeth that are worn, chipped and misshapen. Unfortunately, Porcelain Veneers also have some drawbacks and in many cases, The Bioclear Method can be a better solution.

  • The Bioclear Method is typically more conservative. In most cases, some of the tooth’s structure needs to be removed in order to place a Porcelain Veneer. The Bioclear Method is an additive technique that doesn’t require removal of existing tooth structure. Bioclear® adds to the tooth and helps make it stronger.
  • Bioclear® can be repaired. While Porcelain Veneers are quite strong, they can chip and crack. This is especially prevalent in patients who grind their teeth, however the teeth can also chip and crack from normal wear. When veneers chip, they typically cannot be repaired and must be replaced. Because the Bioclear Method uses a dental composite, if the teeth chip, they can easily be repaired.
  • The Bioclear Method is less expensive than veneers. While prices can vary, Bioclear® is typically about half the cost of placing Porcelain Veneer. As a result, both the initial cost for treatment and any subsequent repairs are much more affordable.
