Levels of Sedation Dentistry Available

At Cherrywood Dental, we offer a comprehensive range of sedation options, including light to heavy, as well as IV. The three main levels of sedation dentistry we provide include:

Mild Sedation

Mild sedation dentistry is the perfect choice if your primary goal is to relieve anxiety.

Medium Sedation

Your dentist may opt for this level of sedation if the procedure involved is a bit more intensive. This level of sedation dentistry will result in a deeper state of relaxation, and can potentially cause mild amnesia. If you opt for this level of sedation, please be aware that you will not be allowed to drive home by yourself following the procedure.

Types of Dental Sedation

Along with there being different levels to sedation dentistry, there are also different methods of providing the sedation dentistry, which include the following:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation dentistry. Your dentist will place a mouthpiece on you that will distribute the nitrous oxide, which will put you into a relaxed state. This anesthetic is a great option to reduce anxiety.

Oral Sedation

The next step up from nitrous oxide is oral sedation, which involves the use of anxiety relieving medication. Much like nitrous oxide, oral sedation will put you into a state of deep calm; however, unlike nitrous oxide, oral sedation can last for several hours after taken, which means you will need to make sure you have a ride home following your procedure.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

The benefits of sedation dentistry are substantial. One of the most obvious benefits to sedation dentistry is the extreme reduction of anxiety experienced during the procedure.

Sedation dentistry is also beneficial because it can help reduce anxiety. Many patients put off scheduling appointments with their dentist because the thought of having work done is anxiety provoking. Sedation dentistry helps alleviate these concerns.

Sedation dentistry also removes or significantly reduces tooth and gum sensitivity, which in turn can reduce a patient’s gag reflex.

Finally, sedation dentistry allows your dentist to work faster and more effectively, which means you will be able to get out of the chair quicker and start your road to recovery!

Procedures Suggested

Certain procedures, such as surgical tooth extractions, implant placement, root canal treatment, and periodontal surgery, will most likely require sedation dentistry. Along with these, the use of sedation for other procedures is oftentimes decided at the discretion of the dentist. They may decide to provide sedation for procedures that may be more intensive, or they may decide to provide sedation for patients that are extremely anxious.

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, most insurance plans cover sedation dentistry procedures. Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what
opportunities may be available.
