Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a procedure that involves digitally constructing tooth replacement prosthetics. CEREC procedures are performed when the crown of a tooth becomes damaged, unless the damage has occurred below the gum line, in which case other options may be considered. The CEREC procedure involves taking scans of the teeth, constructing a ceramic prosthetic, and then placing that prosthetic often times in a single visit.

At Cherrywood Dental Care, there is nothing we love more than watching our patients discover a brilliant new smile. Please contact our staff to see if CEREC is right for you. Our clinic is proud to provide the comprehensive care you need to improve your dental health and is committed to returning even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Expectations

CEREC can usually be taken care of with just a few dental appointments. The first step will involve your dentist taking a chairside scan, which they will then use for the construction of a ceramic prosthetic, that will later be placed upon the damaged area. Your dentist will make sure that the prosthetic matches the shade of the tooth being restored as closely as possible.

Once the crown has been made, the CEREC prosthetic will be placed over your natural tooth. Doing so will allow you to begin chewing and biting the way you did before. Best of all, the materials used to address the problem area look very natural, which means there is a good chance no one will be able to tell the procedure occurred.

The Process

The CEREC process includes the Acquisition Unit and the Milling Unit.

The Acquisition Unit is a mobile device that is used for taking CEREC scans. This scan will identify broken portions and decayed areas of teeth that require restorative interventions. After only a few minutes, the unit will compile the data it has gathered and begin designing the replacement needed. Once this model is completed, it will be sent to the Milling unit to be constructed.

The Milling Unit will then create the replacement part for your tooth repair. Once your dentist has matched the necessary shade, the milling machine will begin to carve the design. Once the design is complete, it will be polished and then bonded to your teeth.

Benefits of CEREC

Many tooth restoration procedures require that an impression of the patient’s tooth be made; however, these procedures can often be uncomfortable and take several attempts to get right. With CEREC, you have the benefit of getting impression free scans, which take a 3d impression of your teeth without requiring you to bite down on anything. This is not only more comfortable for you, but also results in a more detailed scan.

Am I a Candidate For Treatment?

If you notice that your tooth has been damaged, or if you are feeling pain or pressure in the tooth, set an appointment with your dentist. Do not wait until your next regularly scheduled appointment. If you wait too long, you risk any infection in the tooth spreading, or any damage to the tooth getting worse.

Once you see your dentist, they will examine your teeth and decide what the proper course of treatment is. If the tooth is not damaged to the point where it needs to be replaced, your dentist may opt to place a dental crown. If the equipment for a CEREC procedure is available, they will create a CEREC crown for you the same day. These CEREC crowns are made by scanning the damaged tooth with an impression free scanner, which then feeds the information to the acquisition unit, which create a full-color, 3D model of the tooth.

Aftercare

Remember that the CEREC crown that has been placed only covers part of the tooth. You will still have your natural root. Because of this, it is extremely important to brush the replacement tooth, floss around it, and wash your mouth out. This should be done twice a day. With proper oral care and regular trips to the dentist, a CEREC crown may be avoided entirely. Still, accidents happen, and if your tooth is damaged you may need to have a CEREC crown placed.

Associated Costs

Like most dental procedures, what is covered by your insurance depends on your individual insurance plan. Still, most insurance plans cover CEREC procedures. Keep in mind that your insurance plan may not cover 100% of the costs, so be prepared to pay some of the costs out of pocket. If you do not currently have dental coverage or would like to discuss payment options, please contact our staff to see what opportunities may be available.
