Puffy or Bleeding Inflamed Gums

Gums that are inflamed, swollen or bleed easily can be very uncomfortable and may be caused by several different factors, including hormonal changes, tobacco use, improper flossing or brushing, or irritation from dental hardware. The most common reason for puffy, bleeding or inflamed gums, however, is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects more than half of all American adults and is most commonly caused by insufficient oral hygiene practices and/or lifestyle habits such as a diet that is high in sugars and carbohydrates.

The early stages of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, and is characterized by gums that are inflamed and/or bleed easily. If treated at this stage, gum disease can most often be easily reversed. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress to periodontitis, which is characterized by gums that are more inflamed and cause greater discomfort. At this stage of periodontal disease, gums can also begin to recede, which can cause teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. If you are displaying any signs of gum disease or have not had a professional cleaning for some time, it is important to schedule an appointment with your periodontist as soon as possible to avoid damaging the health of your mouth any further.

How to get rid of inflamed gums?

While having gums that are puffy, bleeding, or inflamed is unpleasant, there are several steps you can take to help reverse this issue and prevent similar issues from developing again.

  • Brush properly: One reason gums may become inflamed or irritated is because of aggressive brushing. When brushing your teeth, do so gently, with a back and forth motion. It is also recommended that you use a soft bristle toothbrush to reduce your risk of damaging the tissue around your teeth.
  • Floss gently: It is important to floss regularly, as doing so removes food particles between your teeth, which if left alone, can irritate your gums and lead to gum disease. While flossing, do so gently and avoid forcing the floss down, as doing so can damage your gums.
  • Rinse: It is important to rinse your mouth after every meal or snack, as doing so removes debris and food particles which can cause gum disease to develop if left in the mouth. It is also recommended that patients who are at an increased risk of developing gum disease use a specially formulated mouthwash to help reduce their risk of gum disease by neutralizing plaque bacteria.
  • Use the right toothpaste: Individuals with sensitive gums may benefit from using toothpaste designed for sensitive gums. Additionally, individuals who are at a greater risk of developing periodontal disease should consider a toothpaste that specializes in neutralizing plaque and/or that repairs enamel.
  • Eat healthy: In addition to practicing good oral hygiene habits, eating a healthy diet is one of the best things you can do to avoid developing oral health issues. Try to limit or avoid foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates. If you do drink sugary beverages, use a straw to reduce the amount of exposure the liquid has on your teeth. Also make sure to get plenty of calcium and Vitamin C, as doing so will reduce your risk of swollen gums.
  • Schedule regular cleanings: While your self-care and lifestyle habits play major roles in preserving your oral health, it is equally important that you schedule regular oral exams at least every six months. Doing so allows your dentist or periodontist to perform a professional cleaning and monitor the overall state of your gums and teeth, which allows them to address issues like gum disease as early as possible.
