Teeth Whitening-Introduction

People have been using teeth whitening as a way to enhance their appearance for centuries. In the past, believe it or not, people used nitric acid to whiten their teeth with very bad effects to their surface enamel. It wasn't until the 20th century that peroxide came into use. And not until 1989 that the first home bleaching kit was made available. And today there are many options. Is this an option for you?
Should I use teeth whitening?
The ease and affordability of this cosmetic procedure make it an option everyone should consider. Everyone wants to look their best. In fact 80% of Americans wish they had a brighter smile. A bright, white smile is an asset both professionally and socially. Teeth whitening will let you maintain a clean, healthy appearance for your teeth. Or you might be wanting to remove the dimming effects of certain foods, drinks or smoking. Whatever your reason, there is an option that will help you to achieve the effect you want
Options for Teeth Whitening
- Whitening Toothpaste
- Today you'll often see a toothpaste labeled as being whitening. These toothpastes will remove debris and film from your teeth using some kind of abrasive additive usually baking soda. For those with minimal dimming to their teeth these toothpastes can maintain the brightness of their smile.
For those who need something stronger the next step up would be something with chemical additives but that can still be used at home. One option is strips. These strips are covered with a gel usually containing peroxide. The newest of these is a dissolving version which is easier to use. The drawbacks are they really only effect a few front teeth and they can cause drooling while in use.
- At Home Bleaching
- Another at home option is a home bleaching kit. It contains peroxide gel and a mouth tray in which to put it. Usually you must wear this for an hour at a time and on consecutive days to see good results. The peroxide gel used in these kits isn't as strong as one dispensed by your dentist but you'll still see results.
- Whitening Pens
- The newest thing on the market are whitening pens. About the size of an ink pen, you use them to write a thin layer of liquid on your tooth surface. This dries quickly and your done. You need to apply two 30 second applications a day for two weeks to get the best results.
- In-office Whitening
- If your wanting the quickest and best results than you must see your dentist. In-office the dentist will use a special light or in some cases a laser, in conjunction with a bleaching gel. The treatment can take up to two hours and you will see immediate results. These treatments can lighten your teeth up to 10 shades whiter.
Each one of these options has their own benefits and drawbacks. With so many different methods available you will be able to find one that fits your budget and needs.
